Hands On Learning in Science

In November our grade 2 and 3 classes showcased in the library the boats and bridges they constructed for science.  This is an excellent exercise in creativity, problem solving and putting their knowledge to the test.

The grade two classes built boats to show their understanding of buoyancy.  Students explored what sinks and what floats, and what makes an effective watercraft. By building and testing a variety of floating objects, students learn the importance of selecting appropriate materials and the importance of workmanship in shaping, positioning, fitting and waterproofing their constructions, so they will do the intended job.

The grade three classes put their knowledge to the test building bridges. Since school started this year, they learned many things about building. They learned about designs, materials, shapes, structure purposes and experimented with methods of building.
